The Other Side - Los Angeles - Madlib

This new CD/DVD series from Time Out (of magazine and guidebook fame) takes artists/musicians/creatives from metro areas around the globe and has them act as tour guides for the "other side" of their city - the cool/interesting/weird establishments they frequent in their actual lives." - Fader

"Pop this in your suitcase along with your translation book and currency converter and you'll be good to go." - Tokion

"These are insights so intimate that residents of the cities profiled might actually get defensive over the exposure of their hitherto secret spots." - Nylon

On April 10th, Time Out and Deaf Dumb & Blind Recordings release Madlib - The Other Side Los Angeles. The fifth installment in the Other Side series features critically acclaimed rapper/producer Madlib's personal audio tour of the City of Angels. Highlights of this genre-bending mix include the eclectic/outrageous jazz consciousness originator - Sun Ra Arkestra, 60's psychedelic blues quintet Outlaw Blues Band, legendary reggae drummer (Burning Spear) Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Jamaican record label head/DJ Producer Prince Jazzbo, and Madlib's own tunes- as Beat Konducta (solo) & with collaborator Jaydee (Jaylib).

On The Other Side Los Angeles DVD, Stone's Throw label supremo Peanut Butter Wolf is your personal guide to LA's sights, sites and sounds. The DVD also features an in-depth interview with Peanut Butter Wolf on 10 years of Stone's Throw as well as videos from several Stone's Throw artists.

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in the Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects.

With the Other Side, a new generation of immersive travel guide is upon us. Deaf Dumb & Blind Communications, a new progressive and multi-faceted entertainment company, teams up with internationally recognized travel guidebook and weekly magazine publisher Time Out to produce a series called The Other Side - an CD/DVD experience that submerses its listeners/viewers entirely below the city's surface.

Each volume of The Other Side boasts two key elements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer and a DVD guide that acts as a visual handbook for both the seasoned traveler and armchair adventurer alike. While some travel guides aim to be comprehensive, The Other Side isn't concerned. It simply wants its user to enjoy and discover the very best and coolest in sight and sounds. It whispers in the user's ear advice on where to go and what to see - and it does it with unprecedented style and flair.

That's why Time Out is a perfect match for Deaf Dumb & Blind's concept. According to Peter Fiennes, Editorial/Managing Director of Time Out Guides, "We're extremely happy to be working with The Other Side and Deaf Dumb & Blind on this exciting new concept. We've always been keen to expand into music, CDs and travel on DVD, but The Other Side gives us the chance to do it all at the same time. The Other Side has lined up some great artists and we're convinced this will be a very successful and ground-breaking project."

Scion Presents "Want2BSquare" Art Shows in LA and NYC

Scion Presents "Want2BSquare" Art Shows in Los Angeles and New York to Promote the All-New 2008 Scion xB
-Gallery Shows Feature Original Artwork from: Dalek, Matzu, Maya Hayuk, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, UPSO, and Freddi C-

LOS ANGELES (March, 2007) – Scion has called upon seven dynamic contemporary and internationally-recognized artists to create original artwork inspired by and in celebration of the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle. The artwork will be displayed at "Want2BSquare" art shows in New York and Los Angeles, and carry the theme of squares, boxes and cubes to follow the xB's boxy style.

"The 'Want2BSquare' show is a great opportunity to blend the creative art world with the launch of the second generation xB," said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager. "Scion will continue to promote artistic creativity in special gallery executions like this."

Each artist was asked to paint on canvases of two square sizes, 48" x 48" and 24" x 24", which were then assembled into cubes that will be suspended from the ceiling at various heights throughout the gallery. Smaller cubes will display the artwork on the outside, while the larger cubes will show artwork on the inside enabling the viewer to gaze up into the artwork from directly beneath the box.

Artists involved in the show include:
• Dalek, creator of the famed Space Monkeys (
www.dalekart.com);
• Matzu, a Japanese artist (
www.matzu.net);
• Maya Hayuk, a classic-rock-punk-folk-rainbow-peace-freak-out artist (
www.mayahayuk.com);
• Sage Vaughn, a Los Angeles based artist (
www.sagevaughn.com);
• Kelsey Brookes, scientist-turned-illustrator (
www.kelseybrookes.com);
• UPSO, publisher of the Art Annual "Faesthetic" (
www.upso.org); and
• Freddi C, founder of the Streetwise art series, (
www.freddic.com).

Guests will be able to meet the artists at both shows and have the opportunity to purchase the original art work. All proceeds from the sales will go directly to the artists.

The Want2BSquare art shows will take place in New York on April 6th at Skylight Studios (275 Hudson Street) and in Los Angeles on April 21st at the Scion Installation L.A. gallery (3521 Helms Avenue, at National). Each event will also feature live DJ entertainment. Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayers from The Rub DJs will perform at the New York events, while the Los Angeles show will host DJ Ramses and DJ Denimslinger.

The art shows are part of an xB pre-launch strategy anchored by the recently launched
Want2BSquare.com site. The site was developed by Scion's creative agency, ATTIK. The "square" universe is represented inside an engaging, entertaining, multidimensional web experience where visitors are encouraged to explore an expansive world, play games against other visitors, view a wealth of video content celebrating the xB's boxy shape, and discover other quirky experiences.

Who Is Joy Denalane?

...and more to the point, why am I only just finding out about her??! Guess I'm behind the times on this one...Anyway I just discovered her via EMusic and am loving what I found out is her first English-language album "Born And Raised". The album features tracks with Lupe Fiasco and Raekwon and overall it's a really solid soul album. Not only does she have vocal skills but she also has some positive messages to share, so defintely give this one a listen. The ever on-point Honey Soul has an interview with Joy where you can find out more info about this German soulstress.
Also check out her Myspace page as well as OkayPlayer for more info. I definitely look forward to hearing more from Joy and hope that she can make further headway into the US market.

Victor Bermon "Arriving At Night" (Hefty Records)

If anyone knows soulful, glitchy, melodic downtempo, its Hefty. Home of Eliot Lipp and Telefon Tel Aviv, their most recent release comes from Victor Bermon. Arriving At Night is quite beautiful and simultaneously confounding to describe. With beats that at times manage to reference both sparse "post-techno" as well as jazzy gems unearthed in dusty crates, Bermon envelops everything in warm melodies and acoustic accents. You can preview all the tracks on the Hefty site and it definitely sounds like an accomplished album from start to finish.
